3 tips to enhance your success by being resilient
My all-time favorite author Maya Angelou had a great insight about resilience:
“I’m not sure if resilience is ever achieved alone. Experience allows us to learn from example. But if we have someone who loves us, I don’t mean who indulges us, but who loves us enough to be on our side, then it’s easier to grow resilience, to grow belief in self, to grow self-esteem. And its self-esteem that allows a person to stand up.”
I just LOVE this wisdom of this woman!
It is important to understand what resilience really is. Resilience is defined as ‘the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.’ Resilient people have a great sense of control over their live and are better equipped to take risks.
We were all born as resilient human beings, however, over time this resilience diminishes as we have various experiences in our life. I wholeheartedly agree with Maya Angelou, a resilient person is one who has amazing support systems in place. Resilience is accompanied by having:
- People we care about.
- People who care about us.
- People who believe in us and our abilities.
- The opportunity to participate in something meaningful – having a purpose.
- Making decisions and contributing our talents to the world.
One of my greatest beliefs is that it takes a village to raise a child. Guess what, that child, even as an adult still needs the village. The villagers may come and go and change over time, yet the village atmosphere still remains. We are stronger when we know we have the support of others.
Thinking about resilience, I immediately think of a beautiful flower breaking through the strongest concrete, despite all adversity!
How can we bring this into our everyday lives to be as strong as that little flower?
As well as having the support of others, I share my top three tips on how you too can increase your self-esteem and stand up as the resilient woman you are, supporting you in your journey of success!
1. Create a clear vision of the future.
Having clarity of your vision is an excellent way to build your confidence and in turn increase your resilience. A crystal clear vision supports you in overcoming any obstacles that may crop up as you your vision keeps you focused at all times. A well defined vision allows you to focus on creating a purpose which becomes your measurable goal.
2. Learn to embrace change.
Change is a guarantee in life and one that a resilient person handles very well. Being flexible is an important part of being resilient. Learning how to be more adaptable, will equip you with the abilities needed to face any adversity. When resilient people face challenges, they are able to quickly adjust their path and find options for adapting their course.
Think of a time when you handled change really well. Ask yourself:
- What were you doing?
- What were you saying?
- How were you feeling?
You have now reminded yourself of the fact that you can handle change extremely well. Remember this state the next time you handle change and get back to that state.
3. Believe in yourself and your abilities.
Remind yourself of just how uniquely brilliant you are by creating your own personal 'brilliance list'. Be proud and celebrate your achievements and your strengths. Create your brilliance list by making a list of:
- Your achievements throughout time (training, qualifications, education, personal achievements, etc.)
- Your personal strengths and skills.
- Your God given talents.
Being resilient is important to us as human beings and it is often one of those areas that is neglected. This leaves some feeling paralysed as they deal with certain life situations, such as tragedy, trauma and grief. Having great resilience allows us to face life’s inevitable challenges, enabling us to bounce back with our usual brilliance.
There are so many practices that you can incorporate into your daily rituals/practices that will support you in your journey. These three tips are a great starting point as they only need a small amount of time invested into you looking within to reconnect with your inner brilliance, your resilience.
Here’s to your resilience.
Be brilliant, be true, be YOU!
