According to initial findings from the ONS survey of 150,000 individuals – the most content person in England is a woman of middle age, with a job, who owns her own home and who lives in the city of Bath.
According to the ONS, quality of life is impacted not only by where we live and what we do, but also by our gender, whether we are in good health, the relationships we have with others and our ethnicity.
The findings are really very interesting and show that those of us who are in work are more fulfilled than those who are unemployed, homeowners are more satisfied then those who rent, and that being in good health is the most important happiness factor in all of the above.
Interestingly, whilst women are generally happier than men, they do suffer from more anxiety, whilst satisfaction was found to be highest among individuals of Indian origin and lowest among Afro-Caribbeans.
Of course we don’t have control over all of the factors mentioned above. For example we can’t change our gender and some individuals are just not in a position to buy their own home. However, there are elements of our lives that could be reassessed and improved which may lead to an improvement in our happiness and life satisfaction.
