Same-sex couples believed to be worse parents than heterosexuals, finds study

According to a survey conducted by Barnardo’s a third of adults believe that same sex couples were worse parents than heterosexuals.

According to the charity’s new chief executive Anne Marie Carrie, this poll highlights a disturbing belief system and means that some children in the care system could be losing out on potential parents.

Previous Barnardo’s research has revealed that only 3.75 per cent of children adopted in England in 2010 were adopted by gay and lesbian couples even though there are more than 64,000 children in the care system, a quarter of whom will not find a family.

An additional report of experiences among adoptive parents revealed that whilst being assessed, one third of couples reported experiencing prejudice and discrimination in relation to their race, ethnicity, sexuality, marital status or financial situation.

Carrie believes it is essential that the notion of gay parents being worse than heterosexual parents must be challenged as it is currently preventing many children from securing loving and stable homes.
