School teaches meditation to reduce stress

In an attempt to encourage pupils to develop extra skills in concentration and help combat anxiety, Tonbridge school, in Kent has introduced an eight week meditation course for its pupils.

Schoolboys aged 14 and 15 will be given lessons which will hopefully show them the benefits of silence and will help them to identify and escape corrosive mindsets that could lead to mental health problems such as depression, eating disorders and addiction.

Buddhism and other forms of eastern meditation traditions were the inspiration for the Mindfulness Campaign. There is a plethora of research supporting the idea that meditation should be used on a wider scale to address stress and mental health problems, including a recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence that is should be offered to those suffering from depression on the NHS.
