Increase your energy levels

Stop relying on artificial stimulants and improve your energy levels naturally.

We've all had those mornings, when you feel like nothing will get done until you have that grande coffee - but there are things you can do to increase your energy levels naturally.

Get enough sleep

OK, so we're starting with an obvious one, but it is important nonetheless. Nothing kills your energy levels like a bad night's sleep - you wake up feeling lousy and things go downhill from there. Aim to get at least seven hours of sleep a night. To ensure you get a decent amount of snooze time, make sure you prepare yourself for bed by turning off all electronic equipment, have a warm bath, some chamomile tea and practice deep breathing.

Eat for energy

Increase your energy levels

It can be tempting to reach for the chocolate bar when you need an energy boost, but eating a combination of protein, good fats, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates will keep your blood sugar levels steady and your energy high.

Avoid energy thieves

That'll be the coffee, the alcohol and the cigarettes. Relying on any of these for energy or relaxation can create long-term problems so it is always best to gain your energy from natural sources.

Exercise in bursts

It may sound contradictory, but exerting energy to exercise will create more energy and help you feel more energetic in the long run. If you don't have time for hour-long sessions at the gym, exercise in short, high intensity bursts instead.

Get enough vitamin D

A lack of vitamin D can lead to fatigue. To combat this, make sure you get a little sunshine every day and if necessary take a supplement.
