Guest blog by Ali Kingston: travelling together in a motorhome
Ever thought about picking up your life and hitting the road? Forever? Read about a couple that did just that and how they tackle bumps along the way....
Mike and I have lived and travelled together in a motorhome for the last 10 years. During this time we have toured East to Russia, Belarus and the Baltic States, South to Turkey and Greece and West to the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Living in a motorhome
I love this way of life because it gives freedom, flexibility and choice of where to go, what to see and where to stay. If we turn up somewhere and don't like it we can just leave and can stay as long as we wish if we fall in love with the place. Wherever possible we meet and chat with the locals to get a true feel of the community.
Challenges
How can we live together in such close proximity seven days a week? Luckily, this has not been a problem and we don't live in each others pockets. The greatest challenge is when we don't feel in control of our own destiny, for example if obligations prevent us from getting on the road. I really enjoy Mike's company and every morning wake up with someone who runs at the same speed as me. Most people find me way too cheerful, far too early in the morning.
Qualities
Our personalities and qualities are similar and we have shared goals and beliefs in what we wish to achieve in our life's journey. I occasionally miss my friends but for big social events we can come back to the UK, either together or individually. The advent of low cost airlines has increased our scope to be able to do this. We both trust each other implicitly and are loyal and faithful when apart from each other.
Personal Development
Our relationship is such that we can be open with each other about what we wish to achieve. We respect each other's wishes of where to go and what to do and see.
Role Definition
These have evolved over the years mainly as a means of living together successfully with this way of life. Lack of space means only one of us can be up and about at the same time. Therefore, I do all the cooking and cleaning; Mike does the driving and I navigate as I am a better map reader and he would fall asleep if he wasn't driving. These are not stereotyipcal sexist roles, but ones that for sheer practicality make the most sense. On top of this, Mike and I are great friends who enjoy each other's company.
If living on the road sounds appealing but you aren't sure if you're up to the lifestyle, travel coaching could help you figure out what to do. A life coach will discuss with you the pros and cons as well as the practicalities. To find out more, please see our Travel Coaching page.
