Dancing has a therapeutic value for seniors

A number of recent studies conducted by the University of Missouri has found that older adults can improve their balance and gait through dance based therapy.

Improving movement and functionality among seniors acts as a preventative measure, reducing their risk of falling and expensive injuries.

Studies have found improved levels of balance, gait and overall functionality among seniors who participated in regular dance-therapy sessions and it has been suggested that nursing professionals and carers for the elderly put these types of programmes into practice in order to reduce the detrimental burden which is cause by falls.

The researchers used a therapy programme called the Lebed Method (TLM), which involves simple low impact dance steps to music and led and adjusted to suit specific needs of those who participated.
