To quote Yolanda “Cancer made me happy!”. A rather dramatic statement but an entirely true one.
Yolanda says “Before cancer I had no idea what true happiness was or even who I was. In my twenties I was working hard, partying hard, smoking, eating really bad food and generally taking it for granted that I could live that way and get away with it. It was therefore a massive shock when, at the young age of 30, I was diagnosed with high grade breast cancer! I thought I was invincible. Things like cancer happened to older people!”.
“I have since realised that I wasn’t really happy, I was simply going through the motions. I smoked even though I knew it didn’t really agree with me. I knew I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to do workwise but I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing. Although my partner (now my husband) & I really loved each other we weren’t truly happy together because neither of us was truly happy as individuals.”
“Once I was over the initial shock of the diagnosis I started to research how I could help myself recover and then remain healthy. I discovered that eating healthier food made me feel a lot better – I had no idea how much impact food had on your mindset and moods (I could be a bit of a grump before!). It was a real eye opener. I love my food more now than I did then!”
“Once I had a handle on my nutrition and was heading for better health I turned my attention to my state of mind. We are what we think and my thoughts were very negative and self-depreciating! I learnt to take deliberate control of how I thought. For instance, I started to notice if I slipped into a bad mood at work and could then decide not to stay there for the rest of the day! I learnt to be a lot kinder to myself.”
“I started thinking about how I could obtain personal fulfilment. I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my (long!) life doing something that made a difference, which is what led me to train as a lifecoach. I believe that I have a lot to offer my clients due to my life experience and the amazing journey I have been on.”
