Confidence Coaching in Stroud

Low levels of confidence can affect all areas of our lives. So working together to increase your confidence could benefit you by:

** Improving your career prospects – getting that promotion, making you stand out at interview, or simply making you more assertive, effective and respected at work

** Improving your relationships – speaking out instead of keeping quiet, keeping calm instead of ‘losing it’, building your interpersonal skills

** Facing challenging situations – the impending performance, the bully at work, the speech or presentation, the anxiety of social situations, the stress of divorce or just the worries and stress of day to day life

** Improving your effectiveness – developing your confidence to get things done, to tackle tasks in the right way or in the right time frame. Let procrastination be a thing of the past not the future!

** Raising your self-esteem – recognising and building on your inner strengths and wisdom, fulfilling your potential, being clear about what you want, believing in yourself rather than putting yourself down.

I use CBT Coaching - an adaptation of the successful counselling mode called CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). CBT Coaching aims to help you build confidence in your ability to handle current issues and turn round habits of thought or behaviour that are stopping you from achieving the best.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

I have been trained in a wide range of different coaching and counselling methods, including:

* Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). A hugely effective therapeutic method that addresses the negative thought patterns that usually underlie stress, anxiety and low self-esteem. Diploma in Counselling, 2000

* Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC). A development of CBT that lends itself more to coaching than counselling. The emphasis is on thought processes and actions that we can take to make our lives more effective. Diploma in Coaching, accred. Middlesex University, 2008.

* Stress management. A multi-modal cognitive-behavioural approach to the nature of stress, its management and prevention.

* Assertiveness and Communication Skills. Understanding how we can communicate to maximise our outcomes and maintain our self-respect.

* Solution Focused Therapy. How to create positive thinking strategies focusing on the solution rather than the problem can often open the door to change.

* Psychodynamic Counselling. A way of understanding the powerful role of the unconscious in our lives, and how we develop defences that can hold us back from achieving our full potential.

* Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). A model for improving performance, becoming an excellent communicator and undergoing personal change.

I am an Associate Member of the Association for Coaching, and an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Further Information

What is stress?

Stress seems to be one of the commonest words in the English language. And its heard more and more often in the workplace, in the home, on the roads But what is it?

Its more than just pressure. Pressure can be a good thing something to motivate and challenge us. Stress could be seen as negative pressure pressure that drags you down and makes you achieve less.

So is stress simply a description of excessive pressure, for example at work or in the family? No! Stress occurs when two things happen you believe the situation you face is too demanding, and you dont believe that you have the skills to cope with it.

How coaching can help you manage stress

Your physical and mental health will improve, leading to a stronger immune system, greater ability to relax and improved productivity and relationships. Most important of all you will be given the tools to become your own coach, so that you can take control of your life and build your confidence in a stress-free way.

Together with your coach you can work out a stress management plan. This will be forward looking and goal-oriented, taking into account all aspects of your life: your thinking skills, exercise, diet, social life and work-life balance. There may be an emphasis on anger management, or assertiveness, or relaxation techniques, depending on your personal triggers and stress responses.

What is anxiety?

Almost everyone worries in fact worrying can be a healthy response to realistic concerns. But if you find that you are worrying excessively, then this becomes a problem in itself. It can spoil your life.

You could be worrying about your family, your health or your finances. You may be anticipating the worst at every opportunity. Or you may be anxious in certain situations, such as giving a talk or a performance or meeting people socially. You may even have a phobia that you want to conquer, such as a fear of spiders.

How coaching can help reduce anxiety

Together with your coach you can work out how to confront your anxieties in a problem solving, effective way. This will be a forward looking, motivational and goal-oriented approach, taking into account all aspects of your life: your thinking skills, exercise, diet, social life and what triggers your negative feelings. There may be an emphasis on performance anxiety, phobias, self-confidence or assertiveness, depending on your personal needs.

Most important of all you will be given the tools to become your own coach, so that you can take control of your life and build your confidence in a calm and grounded way.

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is a term that is much bandied about nowadays, but what exactly is it? Its a way of rating ourselves. Those of us who suffer from low self-esteem tend to rate ourselves very harshly, so that we feel a failure. Then we tend to act in a way (and think in a way) that seems to prove our rating of ourselves. That compounds the problem and makes us feel even worse. And so it goes on.

Low self-esteem often stems from messages we received in childhood, for example by over-critical parents or by bullying at school (both by children and teachers). If someone calls you an idiot or useless enough times then it becomes part of your own image of yourself.

How coaching can help raise self-esteem

Together with your coach you can work on raising your self-esteem and self-acceptance. This will be a forward looking, motivational and goal-oriented approach, taking into account all aspects of your life: your thinking skills, exercise, diet, social life, work-life balance and what triggers your negative feelings.

Most important of all you will be given the tools to become your own coach, so that you can remain a confident, grounded individual whatever the circumstances.
