Family Constellation Coaching
Family constellation coaching focuses on reconciling and resolving relationships across the generations. You may be struggling with a situation that is creating conflict between family members, or you may be wondering why your relationship with parents or siblings is so difficult? You may be feeling stuck, discontented or angry with your life and your relationships with others are adding to the confusion.
A family constellations coaching session looks at how different members or relatives are positioned in relation to one other, within the family through creating a 'visual mapping' or snap-shot of your family or network. You can use creative tools like our 'diaspora dollies,' to explore the relationships, influences, patterns and cycles of behaviour that are sometimes hidden and out of view.
How Can This Approach Help You?
The aim of constellations coaching is to 'restore the flow of love' within the family by looking deeper and exploring further. As you surface some of the dynamics that may be hidden within the situation, you become clearer about the issues that you want to resolve. When this happens you can then identify what steps need to be taken to reconcile relationships or resolve a difficult problem between parents, siblings or other family members.
We have a range of resources to support multi-culture-colour families and communities in coaching. For example one client in a coaching session used them to used them to explore colour-dynamics that she could not talk about within her own family of origin. "Oh" she said, picking up a couple of dark skin figures, "so these" (holding two brown skin dollies) "can represent my husband and mother-in-law and these, (holding two white skin dollies) my sister and mother".
Who is it for?
Coaching constellations can be used to help explore difficult issues like depression and stress, identity and belonging or if you would like a safe space to explore issues around colour, culture and caste. Alternatively you can use them to build better relationships, for example between parents and adult children, siblings, and family members and close relatives.
What to Expect From Your First Session?
Family Constellation Consultation
If you want help to see a specific situation in a clearer light, one session may be enough. This is a two hour session that explores a particular issue and as it can be helpful to have someone else who attends as a resource or support, you may choose to bring up to two other family members who act as a kind of ‘witness’ of what is taking place. “I appreciated your determination to be true to yourself and share what felt right in the moment, as I see it, following the essence of constellations work. Thank-you too for confirming that I was experiencing what I needed to, which was to view my family as a family unit and to feel my place within it”.
“Another thing that has happened is noticing synchronicity in my life and that of my brother who is a year older. I recall looking at our positions in the circle and being a little worried about him not being 'far enough ahead/in front' of me and thinking that I should 'step back'. The reality is that we are very parallel in our life stories at present”.
“Memory shifts continue to happen. Not just seeing things but being able to consider issues with a bit more depth and perspective”.

Testimonials: Professional Development Coaching
I found the practical exercises particularly useful in helping me to visualise some of my work challenges and relate them to my feelings about my abilities and strengths. Also important was having a safe space to think about my development and that space being protected and boundaried. This allowed me to explore issues and be appropriately challenged and I found Sonya’s style of discussion and probing very useful.
Overall, I would say that this is a very insightful experience that gives you an opportunity to evaluate what you have achieved professionally and the push that is needed to start exploring any new desires or aspirations. The benefits are two fold in that I have found some clear direction as well as had some insight into self-created barriers and how easily those barriers can be over come when things are put into perspective. Marsha – Deputy Service Manager
I really wanted to learn more skills for how to manage conflict from my clients, not get involved and remain detached. During our sessions Sonya gave me some communication tools to help de-escalate verbal conflict and showed me some models for how to get to win-win. I have a complex caseload of venerable adults and children so it is important for me to feel confident in my abilities, I now have a much better understanding of my own approach to conflict and how to resolve it with others. Geraldine - Social Worker
I started coaching at a time of transition in my career, I had been in my present job for several years and was ready to move on, the coaching gave me the impetus to apply for my dream job when an opportunity became available. I especially liked Sonya’s questioning and conversational skills which got me thinking about ways forward and it was also helpful to have her concentrate and reflect accurately what I was thinking, her motivational coaching style was definitely appreciated. Every session offered me an opportunity to look at circumstances from various perspectives and I was able to commit to positive change without over focusing on the possible existing risks.
