My clients tend to be busy individuals who have a lot of projects on the go. They can be business owners who want growth, or new managers in organisations who want to improve their leadership, or project managers who want to make progress in their career. Whether the clients call it business coaching or leadership coaching or personal or career coaching, my clients are juggling many responsibilities regarding tasks and people. They want more achievement, more return on their personal efforts and have to work through others to get to where they want to be.
I have a background in technical management and leadership that may be helpful for more short term needs. I can bring all my experience of project (and time) and people management for quick resolution to an 'overwhelm' issue, where I have natural empathy without a lot of explanation required. For example I've helped business owners and busy individuals get more done in their business or career. I also run a small business support group, so I well understand the typical challenges of one-man businesses.
My development as a coach has led me to favour non-directive coaching if people are willing to contract for that. It delivers more learning power. I have a grounding in a range of the underlying theories of coaching (e.g. psychodynamics, adult learning, perspective-taking, NLP) which encourages me to want to do more developmental coaching. I'm an avid follower of Development Coaching:The Developing Self by (Bachkirova 2012) that recognises that we have so many dimensions to our ability, and ways of acting and being to choose from, such that personality profiling seems too limited an approach to understanding self and others. (I do use Motivational Maps which are more about energy than personality.)
I'm interested in collaboration and encourage everyone to learn coach skills. I believe we need to give everyone the chance to lead and leading includes coaching. Giving children small leadership tasks with friends and siblings is great way to encourage the taking of responsibility for one's own life. Knowing leadership helps to understand what it is to be a good follower as well as the challenges of influencing others. Leaders and followers work best when collaborating as teams, to work toward the common good.
I like to help team leaders with their personal development, particularly soft skills, confidence and belief. I believe in coaching being an allowing process; allowing others to reach for what they want to do and becoming aware of self-limitation. I primarily offer coaching but can mentor on time/project management and planning issues and facilitate team-working. I also offer coach supervision to relatively new coaches, or managers.
I like to support people to have confidence in who they are, particularly to know themselves, their strengths, what they find effortless. People may feel their weaknesses have drawbacks: creating a feeling of being stuck, like continually having the clutter of many unfinished projects or having direction yet apparently never arriving at a desired destination. The trouble is we cannot have superpowers in all aspects of our lives. My coaching is based on the philosophy of what is the most efficient way to use the powers the client already has and ideally to be clear about one magical superpower, a natural ability that is no effort at all. I like to to be a mirror, and another brain to help get around issues rather than believing it is necessary to fix things. An understanding of subconscious habits may be all that is needed.
What are you looking for in a coach? What do you expect from coaching? When I personally look for a coach, sometimes I want someone of a similar mind because that will understand my issue efficiently. This probably relates to a short term performance need where I need to exert myself more or need a bit of an energy boost, through inspiration or challenge. Sometimes I want someone with a different perspective because my skills and experience are lacking and I need some help to open up more challenging blind spots. Our relationship is more collaborative in working on an issue, and potentially suggests a more developmental need that may take a little longer.
