Very simply, as a performance coach...

As you visit this site, I wonder if you are asking yourself how a coach will help you, what a coaching session involves, or whether coaching will make a difference to your development?
So why should you work with me?
Well that depends very much on what you are looking for, as different coaches have different specialities depending on their expertise. When you work with me, you will be involved in a series of structured conversations; each one has agreed boundaries, is strictly confidential, follows a format that you understand, and is totally focused on helping you get the personal development outcomes you are looking for.
Let me tell you a bit about myself. The common thread in my career has been helping people develop their skills, knowledge and experience, through a training capacity in public services, working in further and higher education, main stream education, sport coaching and as a business team coach.

However, I have a belief that that there is a huge difference between having a certificate and being competent. My quest for learning and my own personal development is as keen as it is has ever been. I have recently completed the Institute of Leadership and Management’s level 5 in coaching and mentoring.
I have worked as a volunteer mediator for over 30 years. This experience, in addition to honing my ability to communicate clearly and effectively, enables me to help others understand and resolve arguments that they have internally with themselves and externally with others.
A coaching session
In my experience, it takes clients a few sessions to learn how to make the best use of the time they have with a coach. I will get down to business quickly by identifying what you want to resolve. I then follow one of a number of models by which I listen, challenge, enquire, ask questions, summarise, clarify etc. as part of a dialogue process whereby we create a very special understanding of exactly what the situation is, what is helping you move forward, what is holding you back and above all what you really need to do in order to make progress. The 'take action' bit at the end is crucial. It is so easy to make wish lists that never happen. Nothing is guaranteed in coaching, but I guarantee that you will finish being absolutely clear about how to take one step in the right direction!
The practicalities of meeting
I regularly travel throughout Somerset, and further if required, when coaching within workplaces. I often meet my private clients at large hotels, quiet cafes or places they feel comfortable meeting me. I take into account my clients' ability to travel, so if this is by bus, we can meet in an appropriate town/village pub, and I am happy to meet at the end of a day. Long walks across downs or in the woods are an excellent way to really explore a range of new possible courses of action to support your personal development journey.
However, coaching via Skype or on the phone is just as effective, and can allow coaching to take place either early in the morning or much later in the evening if a client has a busy and demanding work life. Some of my clients are abroad, and this is the only practical way that a coaching session can take place.
Coaching within a business
As an active member of the Yeovil and Mendip FSB, I appreciate the challenges faced by those running small to medium sized businesses, particularly owner managers who have to manage the dilemma of being part of a team, but separate from it. Family run businesses face their own particular challenges of decision making, and succession from parents to their offspring.
Finally, I am a life long addict to the sport of athletics. As an athletics coach in the sporting context, I bring the same belief in every person's ultimate potential, but apply the process of questioning and listening that I believe helps individuals learn and make more effective decisions about their performance.
So how does all this help me help you?
I like to feel that I offer a unique service: no one else has had my collection of experiences. My success with you on your personal development journey will come from my commitment to gain an understanding of your situation – I need to understand it and you need to understand it. This only happens through the partnership we set up. I will only use tools and techniques that work; if they don’t work I don’t use them! I will help you to think differently, be more positive, to see new possibilities, to recognise the strengths you have and how you might best use them. Above all, you will make positive first steps towards your goals: these have the potential to build your confidence to the point where you don’t need me any more.
That is my ultimate goal: to help you develop your capacity to resolve your own situation both now and in the future.
