About me

Very simply, as a performance coach...

‘I will help get you to where you want to be with your personal development quicker, and more effectively, than you if you tried to get there on your own.’

As you visit this site, I wonder if you are asking yourself how a coach will help you, what a coaching session involves, or whether coaching will make a difference to your development?

So why should you work with me?

Well that depends very much on what you are looking for, as different coaches have different specialities depending on their expertise. When you work with me, you will be involved in a series of structured conversations; each one has agreed boundaries, is strictly confidential, follows a format that you understand, and is totally focused on helping you get the personal development outcomes you are looking for.

Let me tell you a bit about myself. The common thread in my career has been helping people develop their skills, knowledge and experience, through a training capacity in public services, working in further and higher education, main stream education, sport coaching and as a business team coach.

Hear what some of my clients think:

The qualifications that I have picked up along the way provide me with an understanding of why structure is important, and the tools to coach effectively.

These include:

  • RSA certificate in counselling
  • Further education teachers certificate
  • Post graduate certificate in education
  • MSc in management training
  • Diploma in personal performance coaching
  • Transactional analysis TA 101

However, I have a belief that that there is a huge difference between having a certificate and being competent. My quest for learning and my own personal development is as keen as it is has ever been. I have recently completed the Institute of Leadership and Management’s level 5 in coaching and mentoring.

I have worked as a volunteer mediator for over 30 years. This experience, in addition to honing my ability to communicate clearly and effectively, enables me to help others understand and resolve arguments that they have internally with themselves and externally with others.

A coaching session

In my experience, it takes clients a few sessions to learn how to make the best use of the time they have with a coach. I will get down to business quickly by identifying what you want to resolve. I then follow one of a number of models by which I listen, challenge, enquire, ask questions, summarise, clarify etc. as part of a dialogue process whereby we create a very special understanding of exactly what the situation is, what is helping you move forward, what is holding you back and above all what you really need to do in order to make progress. The 'take action' bit at the end is crucial. It is so easy to make wish lists that never happen. Nothing is guaranteed in coaching, but I guarantee that you will finish being absolutely clear about how to take one step in the right direction!

The practicalities of meeting

I regularly travel throughout Somerset, and further if required, when coaching within workplaces. I often meet my private clients at large hotels, quiet cafes or places they feel comfortable meeting me. I take into account my clients' ability to travel, so if this is by bus, we can meet in an appropriate town/village pub, and I am happy to meet at the end of a day. Long walks across downs or in the woods are an excellent way to really explore a range of new possible courses of action to support your personal development journey.

However, coaching via Skype or on the phone is just as effective, and can allow coaching to take place either early in the morning or much later in the evening if a client has a busy and demanding work life. Some of my clients are abroad, and this is the only practical way that a coaching session can take place.

Coaching within a business

As an active member of the Yeovil and Mendip FSB, I appreciate the challenges faced by those running small to medium sized businesses, particularly owner managers who have to manage the dilemma of being part of a team, but separate from it. Family run businesses face their own particular challenges of decision making, and succession from parents to their offspring.

Finally, I am a life long addict to the sport of athletics. As an athletics coach in the sporting context, I bring the same belief in every person's ultimate potential, but apply the process of questioning and listening that I believe helps individuals learn and make more effective decisions about their performance.

So how does all this help me help you?

I like to feel that I offer a unique service: no one else has had my collection of experiences. My success with you on your personal development journey will come from my commitment to gain an understanding of your situation – I need to understand it and you need to understand it. This only happens through the partnership we set up. I will only use tools and techniques that work; if they don’t work I don’t use them! I will help you to think differently, be more positive, to see new possibilities, to recognise the strengths you have and how you might best use them. Above all, you will make positive first steps towards your goals: these have the potential to build your confidence to the point where you don’t need me any more.

That is my ultimate goal: to help you develop your capacity to resolve your own situation both now and in the future.

Feedback and recommendations

"I have worked with Graham in two capacities: as a personal coach through my personal development and also as a coach at The Avon Gorge Hotel for the senior management development. Both were extremely positive experiences and were extremely valuable. Graham has a great energising and engaging way to his coaching. I have no hesitation in recommending Graham's services to individuals or businesses. I look forward to working with Graham in the near future."

Guiilaume Lesage - hospitality and food & beverage specialist | Hotel general manager

"Having experienced the effect of Graham's coaching in both the short and long term, I cannot recommend him more highly. His professionalism and depth of knowledge coupled with a sensitive and emotionally intelligent approach are a winning combination in every sense. In my opinion, an invaluable and vital asset for any organisation to have the benefit of."

Steve Bratt - head of physical education at Wells Cathedral Junior School.

"Graham is an authentic coach, who uses his experience, training and personal approach to get to the heart of the matter. He is honest and transparent, which makes his coaching approach of reframing, challenging and supportive questioning full of integrity. I cannot recommend him highly enough."

Lizzie Bond – chief executive, Changing Tunes

"I have been fortunate enough to work with Graham for almost two years on various school development and coaching projects. Graham helps me see things from a different perspective and has been instrumental in shifting my thinking and leadership style. As a result the staff team on each of the three sites I lead has become a strong unit, working always for the best outcomes for every child and young person in the federation.

Through building teams, leading coaching sessions and mediation sessions we have been able to explore many concepts such as Johari Window, Transactional Analysis and considered different competencies to create an effective team. Graham has led our middle leaders to develop their thinking and ownership of the projects they lead on. He has had a positive impact on classroom practice through joint development with the leadership team of our appraisal processes, which I believe are innovative and have shifted from a box ticking exercise to a totally integrated system for coaching and performance management. Teachers look forward to a meaningful dialogue about their career and improving their practice to have the biggest impact on our students.

Graham is easy to talk to, he listens well and is quickly able to understand the situation of the schools and make positive effective suggestions for improvement. This has helped the whole Federation of schools to become a learning culture for the benefit of everyone, and has helped staff become more creative in their thinking so that individual student needs are met. We successfully shifted the school during our last OFSTED inspection to “Good” having spent a number of years “requiring improvement” I believe that Graham’s support was instrumental in achieving this and we have a clear focus on the future to ensure we achieve our potential for our learners.

These are exciting times for us, and I have no hesitation in recommending Graham to work with you, with your leadership teams and all of your staff to support you in realising your ambitions for your schools."

Elizabeth Hayward – executive head teacher, Elmwood and Penrose Federation

"I recently, attended a course on communication presented by Graham. He is an excellent tutor/coach. His course material was highly informative, interesting and thought provoking. His delivery style kept the group involved, motivated and attentive. Graham manages to make the group he is coaching feel involved as a team and valued as individuals. I am looking forward to furthering my knowledge in this area, due to the interest he sparked in the subject, and wouldn’t hesitate to sign up for more of his courses."

Julie Hasell – child care practitioner

"Every journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. If you believe in this philosophy then the best first step you can take is to get performance coaching from Graham Norris. Coming into a new organisation it would have been easy to get dragged down by day to day worries and lose sight of my goals. Working with Graham has helped me to keep a positive focus on leadership and effective delegation to enable change management. I feel happier, less stressed and more fulfilled. His work with individual staff has helped them find their own personal direction and motivation and improved their performance in the workplace."

Arthur Mayhew – Assistant Head Wells Cathedral School (Pastoral Care and the Co-curriculum)

"Graham is a motivational and engaging trainer, with an obvious passion for coaching, as well as a huge knowledge of different tools and techniques. He’s also very considerate as a trainer, always taking the time to ensure everyone’s understanding of any topics under discussion before moving on. I really enjoyed the course, and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Graham to any organisations wanting development training or coaching."

Jo Friend – social media consultant & trainer

"Initially I was quite apprehensive about the coaching process. I had come to a crossroads in my career and was feeling uninspired by my job. I did not want supervision or counselling and was confused about how coaching could inspire me. However, Graham’s approach was very refreshing. He guided me through a process that encouraged me to consider the options, his encouragement gave me confidence to achieve and the goals were realistic and manageable. I am now in a different role that has released my old enthusiasm and drive. I look forward to my working day and feel able to carry on furthering my career. My next objective is to find an area of study that will equip me for further progression. I am amazed at the progress that I have made and I know undoubtedly that Graham’s coaching has unlocked my potential and given me the confidence to achieve."

E King – community health practitioner, Somerset

"Graham has provided a highly personalised and effective course of coaching which has enabled me to address and move forward in dealing with a range of issues. He showed an astute grasp of the hurdles and wasted no time in focussing in on the root matters and assisting me in developing strategies with which to overcome them.He provides a service which isn’t about what he can do, it is about the client realising their path forwards and enabling them to look through the trees to see the wood, so to speak. I would thoroughly recommend his approach and his associated career areas meant that he was able to understand clearly what I wanted from the process."

Tim Marshall – The Detective Project, Wessex

"Having worked with Graham for over a year on a number of projects, I can vouch for his passion, energy and commitment to quality. Graham is a skilled communicator and is able to translate ideas into action promptly, concisely and accurately. Graham adjusts his style to suit his audience superbly – and ensures that he’s getting this right every time. Graham takes the time to understand any piece of work to ensure the highest confidence of success – and consistently enhances the value of that work by following-up with ‘delighters’, extra reflections, feedback and analysis.I will continue to enjoy working with Graham – and know that he has significant impact on individuals, teams and organisations in all that he does."

Nik Harwood – service manager: leadership development, Somerset Centre for Integrated Learning

"Graham worked with me in a coaching relationship; he was professional, positive, and focused. His ability enabled me to set reasonable goals, review progress and make significant short and long term plans to support my career development. I would definitely recommend Graham who demonstrated a high level of skill throughout this process."

Ann Jones – clinical services manager, CAMHS

"When Graham first approached me and told me about his coaching business, I was working hard but not smart. I was chasing the wrong dream for very little reward. Using the techniques and processes Graham and I discussed, I am now more focussed and my income has increased hugely. I still need to work hard to reach my goal, but I am now so much closer. More importantly, I was able to increase my income by utilising my existing skills and experience, and have a more focussed, realistic and achievable plan to work to."

James Gripper – national sales manager at Fragrant Earth International

"Working with Graham has enabled me to learn new skills and strategies specific to my needs, which have helped me reach my goals. These skills I now use daily to reach new goals I set myself. They have enabled me to realistically structure my work, so making me more efficient and effective. This in turn greatly reduces any stress felt!Graham was easy to talk to, very attentive, never dismissive and always encouraging. I feel very much empowered to achieve whatever I decide to."

Rachel Berney – national youth development coach programme, UKA

"Graham is the consummate professional who instills confidence and motivation in others. His approach to coaching is of the highest quality and his ability to organise and deliver high quality events is outstanding. I have no hesitation in recommending Graham."
