I am deeply committed to coaching as a tool for transformational change.
I started my career working for the Workers Educational Association (WEA), doing outreach work in the Welsh Valleys and working with small groups of women returning to education. It was interesting and challenging work and I felt honoured to be received as a guest in the communities I worked in.
This led me on to working for the Community University of the Valleys (CUV) in Tredegar, and later in the University of Wales, Newport as a social work lecturer.
I missed being out in the community so I contacted people I knew who worked in social care and started delivering team development interventions to local authorities and third sector organisations all over Wales. At the same time I decided to upskill and completed several coaching course to help me improve the communication and collaboration between the groups and individuals I was currently working with.
When I coach I focus on the ability of individuals to become more resilient, self-sufficient and effective in times of change and growth.
My coaching approach is faithful to non-directive principles, with an emphasis on allowing people uninterrupted time, and space with someone they trust, to think profoundly about their problem and come up with a fresh approach of looking at it and solving it.
My coaching practice is a product of team development and action learning work. In the early days of my business, I was increasingly being requested to coach leaders in the organisations I was working with. One-to-one coaching informs my facilitation and training, and vice versa. I find coaching endlessly fascinating – in the same day I will work with the widest range of jobs, personalities and issues, with people all around the world!
I also enjoy coaching leaders and managers who are ready to move away from a top down, command-and-control style to a more transformational and connective style of leadership.
I have my own coach, I am part of an action learning set for facilitators of action learning, and this contributes to my continuous personal and professional development. I feel privileged to be part of a unique, small business group operating in the areas of change and making a difference, helping people and improving people’s lives.
