Why do England always fail to win at penalties?
So, the question many of us who followed England in Euro 2012 will be asking is: when will we win a penalty shoot out again? In reality I’m sure we will, but I believe it will be down to luck rather than anything else. That is, until our players change their thinking.
The fact of the matter is that our football team and our supporters believe that they will fail in a penalty shoot out. I remember 8 years ago when we lost to Portugal on penalties; Steven Gerrard said “We never win on penalties”. So, there it is; the man who is leading our national side believes that we will never win on penalties. His language is telling us what his belief systems are. Whilst watching our boys step up to the penalty spot last night I could tell that each one was experiencing a huge amount of self-doubt. It was clear in their body language, with the exception of Joe Hart, that we were doomed. They were paying attention to what they didn’t want to do rather than what they wanted to do. It is paramount in the mental side of sport to pay attention to the right things. Remember; you always get what you pay attention to. By focusing on the result you want rather than the one you don’t can be the difference between winning and losing.
However, what needs to be addressed before the next dreaded shoot out for England is the changing in mindset and belief. We will continue to lose in future tournaments if we don’t dispel this belief. To say it is a limiting belief is an understatement, but if our players believe that we are cursed when engaging in this kind of competition then there will be many more times when the nation will be heartbroken.
A good mind coach has to be employed to work with the players so that, if and when we find ourselves in a penalty shoot out in the future, we can see a team positively stepping up the spot, believing in the outcome they are wishing to achieve - to shoot and score rather than hit the bar, miss or have the ball saved.
What kind of limiting beliefs do you have and how are they holding you back from achieving what you want? Remember, you always get what you pay attention to; so, what are you paying attention to right now? If you have a belief that's stopping you from winning or reaching a desired outcome, then make sure you break the pattern by changing the belief; then you can pay attention to the right thing.
