What is love?

This is one of the most asked questions of mankind.

Firstly, love is something that cannot be defined. We can all relate to it, we know it is there, we can see it, we can hear it. We just cannot define love by words. We all experience it, we have all felt it, but most of us really don’t understand what exactly love is.

Robert Holden author of Loveability says ‘Love is an inner journey home’.

Nicholas Sparks states that ‘Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it’.

Oliver Wendell Holmes tell us that ‘Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness’.

So… what is love?

Love is us, you are love.

All that you see is love. Love is many things, it is unique to each and every one of us. Love is all around us, it is in the sky; the universe is love, the animals are love, and the plants are love too.

To know what love really is, we need to be open to ourselves, as we are all expressions of love.

Love is the acceptance of who we are, the good and bad. I love this quote by Marilyn Monroe ‘I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best’. Love is unconditional.

Love is our teacher.

Allow love to teach you. Love teaches you to look inside yourself for the answers and helps you to understand the lessons you need to learn to make it through life. Love allows us to grow and develop, it is an experience which teaches us how to examine our own hearts to find our own truth.

Love is happiness, tranquility and joy.

Love is waking up in the morning with a smile, daring the world to fling anything your way, knowing that your soul can take on anything.

Love is power.

Love knows no fear. Love is completely fearless.

Love comes in many forms; love languages, lessons, through people, experiences, writing, visuals… the list endless.

Love creates intimacy and connection.

'Life is all about love, and when isn’t, it is really' (Robert Holden).

For us to understand and experience love we must understand and experience self-love. To really know love you must love yourself first. By loving yourself you will know love, you will know how to love, you will know what love is and also what love is not.

It is not your duty to search, obtain or request for love, but to locate and find the barriers within yourself that you have built.

D.H. Lawrence explains that ‘those that go searching for love only manifest their own lovelessness, and the loveless never find love, and they never have to seek for it’.

Love is within.

We often hear of people going in search of love. Some claim to have ‘found love’, even in the most hopeless of places, as Rihanna famously sings.

However, the truth is when we look for love outside of ourselves we feel unlovable. We start to feel unlovable because we feel indifferent. Until you understand this, you will always be searching for love outside of yourself, creating more pain for yourself.

Love is honest, love is security, love is vulnerability, love is respect, and love is acceptance.

“All the love of this world is based on self-love’ Meister Eckhart.

Now, this is my short explanation of what love is, however as I have said love is more than words and it cannot be defined by any amount of words.

Please let me know below what love is to you.

Thank you.
