Top Six Career Dilemmas and How Coaching can Help
25th July, 20120 Comments
In a world where a job for life is truly a thing of the past, many of us find ourselves changing jobs and maybe even careers at least once every few years. In fact, it is reckoned that the average person will move jobs up to 11 times and change career 4 or or 5 times in a lifetime; that's not to mention the interdepartmental changes that occur within a workplace.
With that in mind, it's hardly surprising that people often find themselves at a crossroads with difficult choices to make in their careers. Here are a few situations that my clients regularly find themselves in and how life coaching may well be able to help:
Asking for a Pay Rise
So, lets say you are happy with your current job, but you are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. With many businesses having instigated pay freezes and maybe even pay cuts, it is a situation that more and more people are finding themselves in. When it comes around to your annual review, few workers find it easy to talk about pay. Firstly, it is good to get some perspective on how the company is performing - whether they are in a phase of investment or cut backs and, if possible, get an idea of what your colleagues are earning. All of this information will help you decide what level you should be pitching at. Following this, there are a number of scenarios that coaching could help you work through to ensure you get the best deal realistically possible. Coaching and NLP can also really help with issues around feeling embarrassed, nervous, feelings of self worth or self doubt, and also feeling confident and happy that you are seeing the full picture and getting the support you need.
Aiming for Promotion
Sometimes it can be tough to find ways to work toward a promotion. Some people are concerned that others will think them 'too big for their boots', or overly competitive. Coaching and NLP can help you put things in perspective and re-frame the situation, so that you feel more in control and view it as a natural progression and a well-deserved step toward your future. It will help you deal with your perceptions of what others are thinking as well as busting any long held negative beliefs that might be holding you back.
Looking for a New Job
It's funny that, even though (in some respects) the internet now offers more access to jobs that are available, when times are hard getting an interview can seem like a huge challenge in itself. Coaching can help you focus on the kind of job that is right for you; it can help you deal with any guilt you may have over leaving your current job, and any fears with leaping into the unknown. Coaching will also make sure that you are putting yourself across in the best light, meaning you'll have a greater chance of success.
Some people think they are a breeze, but they are in the minority! A long sought-after job interview can be the stuff of nightmares for some, and you'd be surprised how many people sabotage their own chances due to nerves and muddled thinking. Coaching and NLP can really help you feel less nervous, be calmer, positive and in control. People find their thinking is clearer, they say what they want to say and answer questions to the best of their ability. It means that you can get the most out of the interview and make it a two way street, gleaning whether it is somewhere that you truly want to work too.
Starting a New Job
Sounds great, doesn't it? But being the new boy or girl can be tough for some of us. Coaching can help you see it as a great learning opportunity, a chance to meet new people and a step toward making your career dreams come true.
A Career Change
More and more of us are shifting our careers completely, sometimes out of choice, sometimes out of necessity. Coaching and NLP can help you whether you are trying to find what sort of career would suit you, thinking about re-training, wanting to set up your own business or leap into a different sort role. Clear decision making, confidence, planning and strategy can all be made easier with coaching. Every situation is different and coaching and NLP work on an individual basis to help you to make the right choices for you and be the best that you can be.
So, as you can see, coaching and NLP can help with a whole variety of career issues, the ones above being just a few. Two or three sessions might be all it takes to get you off to a brilliant start and making your career dreams come true.
