Navigating the Quantum Leap
Witnessing the Leap
The last 60 years has witnessed a revolution in the manner in which humanness is understood. Research in the mid 1970s clearly identified that something new was emerging in human consciousness. A momentous leap for mankind was how Prof. Clare W Graves described this in 1974.
“Humans must prepare for a momentous leap… it is not merely a transition to a new level of existence but the start of a new ‘movement’ in the symphony of human history.” Clare W Graves
This 'Quantum Leap' that Graves describes may be better understood as the transition from 'human doing' to 'human being'. It is characterised by an immense increase in behavioural freedom and the capacity to navigate through complexity. Literally everything becomes an 'I choose to' without harm to self, others or life-in-total. Here is the thinking behind true sustainability and the pathway to elegant yet functional simplicity!
Interestingly in the early stages of this Quantum Leap we are literally unaware of the deep changes within. The vital signs of our changing interactions with colleagues, friends and close ones leave us knowing that something needs to change but what? Such 'perplexity' is a signal from these emergent psychological capacities as they remain inhibited by personal, cultural, and social factors. The powerful inner directive is to grow into a new human form with new biological, psychological, cultural and social expression. It is literally a metamorphosis of being, a Quantum Leap of consciousness.
What really works in this Quantum Leap transition?
Sixty years on, the work of developmental theorist, Clare W. Graves, has grown into a body of knowledge which in every way maps and complements a leading-edge understanding of humanness. The body of knowledge was researched between 1950 and 1974; validated through large-scale, international field trials from 1974 to 1995; published by Beck and Cowan in the book, Spiral Dynamics in 1996; and since 1998, has been applied and developed into a robust practice across a broad spectrum applications including coaching.
Since 2011 this work has for many practitioners become an Holistic approach known as Solonics. Solonics is the art and science of human emergence, where the primary purpose is the emergence of the solon (“soul” + “holon” = “solon”). The term holon is used to describe a discreet intelligence, in this context, a human being, that is a “whole” unto itself, and forms “part” of a holarchy. The soul, which is also a discreet intelligence, is like the expression of a song in a Kosmic songline, creating a bridge between holon and spirit, where Spirit is both the original song and the invitation to sing. Solonics is the art and science of humanness.
What are the implications for coaches and clients?
The most profound implication is that in many cases the inner 'Quantum Leap' has already happened. The real opportunity is to grow into this new awareness. Through skilled coaching words such as "Thank God I'm not going mad" or "it was like having a veil lifted from my eyes" become commonplace.
