Too much television results in poorer mental health for children

A new survey by the Children’s Society has shown there is a strong link between children watching too much television and suffering from mental health problems, reports The Telegraph.

Watching shows such as reality TV, soaps, and chat shows can give children unrealistic ideas and aspirations of beauty and wealth, and encourages children to be more consumer driven.

Children currently spend £3 billion of their own money each year on magazines, clothes, video games and food and drink.

The study surveyed more than 35,000 people, and made many suggestions, including banning junk food advertising, and that the more children are exposed to a consumer culture through television and the internet, the more materialistic they become, meaning relationhips with parents often break down, and mental health suffers.
