Sadness can be beneficial

The saying ‘what does not kill me, makes me stronger’ may have some truth behind it, according to an article over at The Telegraph.

Psychiatrists and researchers claim that experience sadness makes individuals more likely to set goals and become more resilient. Mental health experts are also saying that the current trend for prescribing anti-depressants may have detrimental effects, as in the long run it can be beneficial.

The risk of becoming depressed can help stop people becoming to frivolous or careless in decisions about important issues, and the notion of there being a quick fix could reduce this, experts say.

Psychiatrist Professor Jerome Wakefield said: “When you find something this deeply in us biologically you presume it was selected because it had some advantage – otherwise we wouldn’t have been burdened with it. We’re fooling around with part of our biological make-up.”
